Secondary Content Research

Content Research

I found this source on Youtube, it was produced by a small independent production company that depicts a childs life with dyslexia. It further entails how the father also struggled at school but tries hard to help his son over 2 day span. This source helped me to understand tone it allowed me to see the emotion that surrounded dyslexia and how it engages the audience. The film at (3:00) denotes the boy sitting alone in school and further walking home by himself. this allowed me to see the loneliness that the character feels and how sad he feels at that point in the film. This short film allowed me to see a visual representation of dyslexia, whilst it is not presented in a way that i want to present it, the film did allow me to see a way in which it could be done. The information i took from this source was that i need to create a certain tone for my film and alienate my character leaving him in a world of his own. This in turn would allow the audience to feel more sympathy with the character and ultimately connect better with him.

This next source i found online, is an article/journal produced by Dr Michael Ryan that looks at the emotional state dyslexia leaves people in, this includes anxiety, depression and anger. The article provided me with some useful information looking at the emotional aspects of the disability, which in effect has allowed me to grasp an understanding of the deep feelings that our main character will feel. The source allowed me to understand that the greatest emotions that dyslexics feel is frustration, because they go into new situations already feeling defeated. Moreover, it is this intense frustration that leads to other developments such as depression and anxiety. From this source i was able to understand the emotional state that dyslexia leaves people with, this is something that i can certainly transfer into my film. This source has allowed me to develop our main characters emotional state to which now i can portray an accurate representation of emotions that he is constantly feeling. Whilst this will improve the realism of my film, it will bring with it a greater connection for the audience, because now i can produce the right emotions at the right time. The audience are now able to see that its a mixture of constant emotions for the main character, which when featured in the right scene enables the audience to feel a great deal of sympathy for him. Thus allowing us to create the biggest connection and engagement with the audience which is our main character.

The last source that i found was a government funded website that offers help and information for people either with dyslexia or surrounding family/friends. The website offers information about the symptoms and signs for developing dyslexia, however i was more keen to understand the impact that dyslexia had on the persons life. Initially the source was able to tell me the definition and key points of dyslexia, which was useful knowledge to understand when creating our main character. I was also able to read about the assessments that people can have to test and see if they have dyslexia as well as understanding a more objective, science based impact that it has. The information i was able to take from this source was more about the development of the disability, which would enable to me to progress the story that we want to tell our audience. This source would meant that we could portray an accurate view of how dyslexia develops. Whilst we plan to start our film with the main character in university already, and has already been struggling with dyslexia for a long period of time, this source ties well with the second source because now we can denote to the audience not only how he feels but how the condition is worsening. This would allow us to create this atmosphere around the main character that there is no hope for him and he wont get better, instead it will always be a dark, cold battle for him.

The camera work throughout the movie and trailer is amazing as it had won the Best cinematography at the Oscars, what you see in the trailer is we see close up and track movement when Leonardo DiCaprio is crawling to get shelter. The effects that the camera language gives to the audience is that it makes the audience up close and personal to DiCaprio's struggles, as the audience get to see what we going though the same way due to the tracking work as it follows him which give a representation that the audience is witnessing someone in a bad situation but cant do nothing to help them, as this creates more empathy towards the character.

The audio that is used in the Revenant trailer and in the film is fast past tribal music, We seen in the beginning of the trailer we see DiCaprio running towards the battle and trailer music is placed. The music is introduced with a slow pace and them rapidly increased in paces. The effect that this has on the audience is that it makes it suspenseful, that the audience could anticipate that the movie would be a intense. The music also effects the mood of the film as this could help the ear that the film is at as this informs the audience as this is placed at a tribal time.

Content

That content that I have seen that would be useful to me is the main character in the film , which is Leonardo DiCaprio, which plays a character that is going through suffering, what effect that his character creates to the audience is that it follows him and through his struggling moments , as the audience get to see the vulnerable side of him and has a feel of him pain. The else is effected is the view of DiCaprio being a victim, as he seen that we lost his son in front of his eyes.

The story line of the Revenat, is about a explore that was attacked by a bear and has to go through struggle. What we see is him crawling through the Forrest and the mountains and the lake to get to his destination. What this storyline connotes is the struggles that explores when through in them times and we get to see how there survived, we see how there ate , how there found shelter and how there stood away from other tribes. The effect that this how on the audience is that there get to see how life was back them and they start to appreciate there life they have now of simplicity.

Analysis

How the research towards the Revenant would help me develop my idea is that the camera language that is presenter towards the struggles of Leonardo DiCaprio, of the camera of being on the same level he is on and following the journey he is going through, I have taking the uses of tacking the character into our idea as i would to follow our character, i would also like add close up as we see in the Revenant of DiCaprio which give it more personal feel and get to see his pain through his face, I would like to add this to our idea of have the most of screen play empathy. It has also developed my idea of the character that DiCaprio has played of someone that go through obstacle and gets through them with pain, as I would like my idea to have the view of the obstacle's but I don't want the main character to go through it as I would like to make my idea feel unsatisfying to keep with the aspect of short film of being against the audience views.

What we see in the movie and within the trailer is the camera language towards the child of being close up , we see this right at the beginning of the trailer as we see a close up of the child's eyes in a dark environment which seem to be in a unease situation. The effect that this has on the audience is they get to see up close the emotion that the characters are going through as it give this a something to focus on as it help define to the audience of what there should be looking at, this also creates an emotional impact as the audience is up close and interment with them.

The editing that that is used in the film is fast paced, as we see in the beginning of the trailer that the cuts of each transitions is facts, what this represents is the heart heart rate of the character , this is to show that the character are in a situations, that there are in as the child is brought up to believe that the room is the whole wold and once out of the room its feel like a new world which make a representation that the child is scared. The effects that the fast paces transition create for the audience is it creates suspense and emphasis the situations. It tell the audience that something bad is happening or going to happen.

Content

The Theme that we see throughout the trailer is a relationship theme between the child an the outside world. How this is shows in the trailer is that the narrative say that "the boy has grown up in a room for 5 years" then there is a shot of the boy in a different room saying "is this a different plants" and the mother says "its a different location". The effects that this theme creates for the audience is that there get to see a young mind being trapped to think that the only place is in that room, we see him experience in outer world.

The story line of Room is about a Son that has been held in a room for 5 years with his mother and gain their freedom to experience the outside world , which he hasn't for five years. The effect that room has on the audience is is creates an emotions view of the mother and son, as this could help relate to the audience as the relationship creates more vulnerability due to it being a mother and a child.

Analysis

How this research will help us develop our idea is that we will included is the editing of the film into the idea, as there had used fast cuts to represent the child mindset which is a situations that he never wanted to be in as he is scared, this will be placed around our character as we will make the cut fast when he is in a intimidating situations. What I would also develop my idea by added similar camera language in the film as I would like to make the main characters of my film to be represented as the child in this film of room , as the child is limited to most thing as our character would be, what I would to add is close up and handheld shots to create a feel that the audience is there such as Room did with there film.

What we see in the film and trailer is the uses of editing, they have colour graded the film in a cool and warm tone, as they have used a cool tone in the daytime scenes, the warm tones are used in the indoor sense where the lights of lamps and celling lights are emphasised, which a warm tone. The effect that this give to the audience is that it makes the film have a more realistic look, as this make it more relatable for the audience as many people have been in situations where there have felt warm and cold, as there know what type of environment that the actors are in.

The audio that is used in the film and in the trailer is a pleasant clam vibe piano. We see this in the beginning of the trailer where we see the trailer a shoot of the boat in the see with the music in the background as being piano. the effect that this music creates to the audience is that it sets the mood of the film, as being a emotional  feel to it, as the movie would be move mental and life changer for the character.

Content

The character that is shown in the film is a uncle that suffers from depression has been asked to look after his nephew due to his brother-and a father-dieing. We see this shown in the trailer when the Uncle has to look after his nephew said by a social worker. The effect of the character of Casey creates to the audience is that it shows a relationship that is not common and begins to see what relationship they have and starts to open up to each other about them self's, as this creates a personal feel to the characters.

The theme throughout the film is the relationship between the uncle and nephew, and there is a secondary relationship between him and his depression. We see in the trailer that he is hanging out with his nephew and also is going through sometimes due to his depression. The effect that this has on the audience is that this helps the audience to understand that there are two sides of him and see that he has a struggles that he does want everyone to know

Analysis

How the research of Manchester by the sea would help me develop my idea, is through the editing as it had place cool and warm tones, how I would integrate this into my ides is that I would make the cool tones for the part of where our character is in a uncomfortable situations as the blue tone would represents the gloomy mood, I would use the warm tones to represent the sections of where we would show the comfortable side and environment that he feel himself in. I would also integrate Casey character into our short film, as the situation that he is in other don't understand as i would create a smiler mind set of Casey.
