Short Film Feedback Videos

Unit 4 Technical Evaluation

Technical and aesthetic qualities

Our strength in our technical aspect that we did well in is the camera language this was also agreed by the audience feedback that we had got as there said that the “camera language was denoted at the right time as when we need to feel close with the actor the camera came closer that connoted that he is the main focus and he his helpless this was shown in the facial expression”. The effect that this had on the audience is that it allowed them to connect with the character more, the camera language was also seeming to be with the flow of the main character. Through the aesthetics we had seen that the edit of the film worked well, as our audience feedback said that the “colours and the time of day that you have filmed some of the seen made it look cinematic and pleasant to watch” This was due to use filming in a golden hour which is where the sun is setting or rising. The effect that this had on the short film is that the lighting made it look like a film a film that you would expect to see on a bug scene. As it made the film look authentic.

A weakness that we see in the short film that could have been improved is the sound that we filmed near the beach, this was also recognised by our audience because there had said “the sound that was meant to be hear which was the dialogue was over powered by the wind sound near the sea” we had also agreed on this, and had seen and heard that the sound disvalued the aesthetics of the film, as the film was up as professional standards and had gone down. How the improvement of sound would make the short film better is that it would have made it more clear of what the characters where saying, as this would have allowed the audience to take the scene into account. another improvement that I would see in the short film is the transition music as the audience did not like the music stop and started. there wanted to see a smoother transition. How this would have made this better is that it would have made the film to have a cleaner look to it.

Realisation of Proposal

How well our final idea projected the pitch idea into our short film was quite accurate. As in our advert we had said that we wanted to include a “mise-en-riens” as this was where an aspect of the middle of the film is placed at the begging. In our pitch we said that we wanted to show the ending of the bus scene at the begging of the short film, this was because we wanted to leave the audience with a question of “what just happened?”. In the pitch we had said that our binary of our short film was going to be “Man vs Words” we had said this because we wanted the words and his dyslexia to be his antagonist that brought his down to his lowest point, we had portrayed this well in the short film of every time his dyslexia was in play his was always to weak one and feel hurt by it. How well this had worked is that the audience got to see that there was something there that was shown to represent an antagonist, as the effectivity presented the binary well as every time we saw the binary take place we saw what was weak and what was strong, the audience saw the enemy.

An element that we had said in our pitch towards our short film was that we were going use the bokeh effect to create an effect and transition of the visuals of a dyslexic person. As we said in our Pitch “we wanted to test our self’s as creator as try something new that could allow use to widen our portfolio” but there was a struggles of creating the effect this was due to time that we had and the some of the resources that we would need. How this would have made the short film better is that it would have allowed use to create something new on cinema as the effect is normally not used in film as there are used in photography but some have been on video. It would have made the structure of the short film more unique and different to watch.

Fitness for purpose audience

The target audience that we initial said that we would like to aim toward the movie to was a 19 year old male, that has an interest of the peaky blinders and the film of pursuit of happiness, the location would be built around the UK and have an ethnicity of all. In our audience feedback we had said that the short film we had a mixed of people that where aimed towards our target audience. What there said that appealed to them was that fact that there had someone in their lives that had dyslexia, this was either their younger brother or friend that had it, as there knew the effect that there had on their everyday lives. The short film also appealed to them in the scenarios that the character was in was relatable as they have gone together on dates with their girlfriend and there have gone out with friend and a stranger had asked for direction before. How well the short film connected with the audience was really well as it connected with them as an everyday person.

On the other side what did not relate to the audience was the form of dyslexia as there have not personally been effected by it , and don’t know the true effect of it and how it can bring you down, as you lose out of opportunities. It did not relate to them as the effect it but it gave them a sense of what a dyslexia person view things in a day to day bases.

Fitness for purpose client

Our short film had meet the brief really well, as we had stuck to the rules of the brief and had completed the short film in time. It had stated the production group had to be no larger than three, in our group we had two it was me and Ben as a group, as we knew we had a good view of each other’s ideas. We had finished the short film in time for the submission deadline od June 2017 as we had finished t in the month of June, which had meant we had stayed in schedule. It had also started on the brief that the short film had to be a single camera production, we had kept it to a single camera production to with stand and retain the quality of the video. How this was effective is that it gave use a set rule to follow, as it gave us an outline for use to work from.

An aspect from the brief that we initial did not follow, this was not in our intention what that the brief had stated that the short film main contain “non copyright video or audio” as the brief was seen to be a professional minded level. As in the first cut of the short film we had realised that one of our music was copyrighted, so what we had did is that we had go back to the editing timeline and had changed the music to a non-copyright music as we did not want our short film to be declined from the competition.

Unit 5 Production Management Evaluation

Constraints Experienced:

Legal

How the short film keeps to the legal side of the film as it does not contain any copyright music as we had first initial had a problem with the copyright music but however have changed it to a non-copyright music, the effect that the non-copyright music had on the short film was that it was viewable to the audience, if the music was copyrighted the video would be taking down by the music created, that why we had kept it non copyright. The effect that this had gave on the short film was that we gave it music that had fitted the short film and had made it unique because of the music being unknown it gave it a character as it had made the short film feel fuller.

The short film did breach some of the legal requirement as it did breach the performance rights, as we would like to change that costume that was used in the short film as there was a branded clothing used in the short film that we initially did not take into account but this is one of the improvement we would have is that we would either ask for permission to use a clothing brand or either remove the brand from the short film and use plain clothing. Through the performers rights we did not take in wavers, to confirm a legal document that there had yes to perform in the short film, the issues that this could create is that the actors could sue us for not asking for legal document permission.

Regulatory

Our short film would be categorised at U, looking through the guideline of the BBFC we see that the short film had been categorized at U this is first shown at the sex as it says that 'mild sexual behaviour can be used' as we have used A boy and a Girl hugging in a non-sexualized way. There is no bad language that is used in short film or and dug use shown in the film, as it says in the guidelines that 'infrequent use only' this is referring to bad language and through the drug’s use, it can be shown in 'educational purpose'. Overall the short film is seen to rate as U, which give it the power to be viewed by a large audience.

What our short film will need to be certificated at 15 would be the language that is used in the film. As it stats in the BBFC that if the film contains any 'strong language' it would be rated at a 15. Why this would be suitable in our short film is the character that we have in our short film are in there 19-20, and commonly the language that their age group that their use is strong language, as by adding strong languages the short film this would have made the short film more realistic, this would also help to make the short film relatable to the audience as it could remind them of a scenario of them and their friends.

Financial

Were we would see were our strength was shown in the financial statues of the short film was at the stage of filming the bedroom scene as no money was spent during that day of production, as the travel was free and the location was already owned at the props that we needed was already owned by use. Why this was beneficial for uses is that it allowed us to spend our money elsewhere in the production in the short film. What this also did for use is that it gave use practice for future project of created a short film with little money and resources that we already own.

An area that I thought that we had overspent was the travel to location, as we had gone to the same location two time which had meant that we had spent twice the money as the tickets cost £14.80 and we had spent that twice which had made it £29.60. This is an area that we think that we would have been more economical, by making one trip and film the scene in one day. Why it would have been more effective by being more economical is that I would have allowed use to spends our money elsewhere that could have improved the quality of our video as we would had spent it on microphone that could be attached to our actors that would improve the sound and make it at a more professional standard.

Management:

Time Management

The time manage through this production of the short film had been productive. As when we had gone out and filmed the time management skills where on point. What we had did is that if there was an angle that we multiple dialogue at we had recoded the whole dialogue conversation that we had placed the camera in the middle and recoded the whole conversation and then to the other side, what this had did is that it cut down the time. What we had did is that we had filmed a scene that we had let the cast and crew have a break and then film the next scene then we would go somewhere to eat and then we film another scene.

One improvement that we would have in our time management is to cut down the days that we go to the same location, as we had go to the beach twice to film scenes on different days. What had happened is that some of our cast was unable to go the beach on that day which had meant that we were only able to film 3 out of the 4 scene that we needed to film in that locations. As it did say on the call sheets that we had 2 days to film the scene but we had agreed that we were able to cut it down to one day, but due to some circumstances of the actors that we need was unable to come. The issue was that we could have spent that time on editing the short film or we would have had the day off, but it had meant that we had spent twice amount of money.

Leadership Skills

The leadership that was lead during this project was that we had lead in a pair, we had visualized the same shots each time. the leadership was at the same time but for different jobs. during production Ben the directors had directed the Actors actions, this was integrated with the camera man which was Mohammed Iqbal (also known as Franki) had also given input on where there could film and how there can work around the daylight. The director and the Cameraman had the thought of the aspects and had agreed on the same things. This was also shown in the post production stage, as we had both the editor and the directors as good chemistry together as there would both agreed on when the shot should cut to a transition. There had both lead the short film together.

During the post production stage the pairs leadership had been slit up most of the post production, this was due to the exam that we had. The issue that this created was, that not all of the days the directors or the editor would sit together and edit. At time the director would be in the editing and at time the editor would be editing himself, what that had done is that the director had to what the editor would agree to and same with the editor he would have to visual what the director would say. The editor would follow the shooting script and see that some of the shots don’t fit and sees a better shot structure and would have to wait until him and the director in the room together, the issue that this created was that the more time was consumed on making changes, and some time there would not agree, because the director would see a different perspective to it.

Communications

During the production of the short film the communication between the cast and crew had been positive. I had seen that the communication in person is much better in person, as this allow us to understand the each other better as it allowed us to give better detail and explain to the actors on where setting of the film was, and had allowed us to give them a back ground story of the actors and how their persona should be. By having that person to person communication what this had allowed us to do is to prepare our actors. We had did this with the crew as well as it gave us the ability to prepare the crew before we get to the location.

The Communication electronically was needed to be improve on as I would say it was bad communication as our cast or crew would be at work most days and would not replay until the end of the day, which had meant the preparation to film would give us short amount to prepare if there was a problem. As we would ask them to confirm if there were still available for tomorrow and get the replay during the evening and we would have to come up with a solution in short amount of time. The effect this this gave on the short film was that it had cut down the time we had left to the production deadline which had meant that it we seemed that the filming was rushed.

Meeting requirements

Our short film had meet the brief really well, as we had stuck to the rules of the brief and had completed the short film in time. It had stated the production group had to be no larger than three, in our group we had two it was me and Ben as a group, as we knew we had a good view of each other’s ideas. As in the first cut of the short film we had realised that one of our music was copyrighted, so what we had did is that we had go back to the editing timeline and had changed the music to a non-copyright music as we did not want our short film to be declined from the competition.

Achieving agreed outcomes

The target audience that we initial said that we would like to aim toward the movie to was a 19 year old male, that has an interest of the peaky blinders and the film of pursuit of happiness, the location would be built around the UK and have an ethnicity of all. In our audience feedback we had said that the short film we had a mixed of people that where aimed towards our target audience. It did not relate to them as the effect it but it gave them a sense of what a dyslexia person view things in a day to day bases.

Working to agree timescales

How well our group worked with the timescale that we had initial gave ourselves that we had wrote in the production schedule was that we had two weeks to finish the final cut of the short film and we had stuck to the deadline as we had completed the edit on Friday the 18th of June and had uploaded the final cut on Friday as this was approved by the teach as we had made the changes on that day. How effective the timescale was that we had prepared ourselves through the production schedule what we would work on when editing as the production fitted around our exam which made the timescale more agreeable.

An improvement that I would have in the production timescale, as we did have some ups and downs with the production, due to the call sheets placement that we had initial agreed on, was that we had later found out the date that we had placed we were difficult for some of our cast and crew due to problem on that day or work that had occurred. Why this was an issues was that if we had changed one date on the call sheet it had meant that one other cast would not be able to make it so what we had did is that we had asked our contingency actors/actresses if there could all agree on a date to go film at our set location.

Recommendation for Future task

One lesson that I have learnt this time round in our production is how helpful a screen play can be, as it allows us to create a visual through a written format, I like that fact that you write down the actions, dialogue and with detail of how it should be said and done on screen. As this allows the cast and crew to get a better understanding of what the final should look like and an understanding of how the actors should preform and the description of the sound and the visual that you would be able to see. Why this is effective is that it cuts down the time of explaining, as it is a universal language that people could understanding this is supported through the structure of the screen play.

One mistake that I have experience during the making of the short film is that I have learnt to avoid in future project is that I have learnt is to never to film a dialogue scene near the beach. This is because in our outcome of our production the wind from the sea made the sound on the short film of where we filmed near the beach was distorted and crackling because of the wind which lost some of the connection between the audience and the film, as it made it seem like the production value of sound had went down and had also made the scene look weak compared to the other scenes. As I have seen if one scene looks weak the whole film would look weak

Short film

Production Log 4

This week was successful. What had happened this week was that first of all we had received our first draft feedback on the film and it was positive and they had liked the initial draft of the film, the only changes that we had been asked to do was the duration of the back section to be shorter and the levels of the sounds on the date scene. We had also been told a idea on how the first could be structured was we had been told that what if the last sense of the short film could be placed as the first sense, we had implied this opinion and had previewed it and had like the outcome much better than the first structure. we then had created the final cut of the film and liked the structure of the outcome of it and had rendered and uploaded it at 1080p and 25fps as the standard film.

Challenges that we had faced this week was that we had an intendent occurred the music that we had original said that we wanted to be include into the date scene was non copyright music we had then later seen that the music was copyright this was show when we had seen that the YouTube notice that the music was copyrighted and was unable to play the video so we had to go back to editing and change the music to a non-copyright music.

We do not have a target for next week was we have completed out short film and made the final cut of the film and we have final the final projection of the film.

We had a team meeting throughout this week while we were editing the final cut of the short film. We had discussed the structure of the short film and had taken the idea of placing the last scene first and we both had agreed that it had made the short film so much better and it started and ended with the audience of feeling hopeful for the character.

The team performance for this week was effective to the short film in a positive because we had finished the final cut of the film before the week had finished. The editor that we had was quick to make any changes that we were told that could be improved and the director had agreed to the improvement and had supported the idea and the editor to make the changes.

Contingency that we had used this week was that we had come across a problem that one piece of the music that we had used was copyrighted, so we had to go towards our contingency and replace the music. Were we had seen this problem was when we had uploaded the cut of the film to YouTube and had got a copyright notice.

We had previewed the short film many time to see if there were any error with the footage, or if there was sound of a cut out of place, we had did this throughout and had did it multiple times when we had moved the last scene around to see if there was an error occurred. The final cut was shown on full screen as we was going to render and uploaded it for out audience to see.

The only problem that had occurred this week was the copyright music that we had used , but how I had said that we had go back to the edit final and had changed the final cut of the short film and changed the music to our contingency music.

The quality control that we had this week was the sound level as on final cut X we had placed a sound meter on the page and had played the short film from beginning to end and watched the sound level meter and every time that the meter went above 0DB it was too loud as the sound would crackle, so we had placed the sound level down so it won't go above 0DB.
