Technical and aesthetic
qualities
Our strength in our technical aspect that we did well in is the camera
language this was also agreed by the audience feedback that we had got as there
said that the “camera language was denoted at the right time as when we need to
feel close with the actor the camera came closer that connoted that he is the
main focus and he his helpless this was shown in the facial expression”. The
effect that this had on the audience is that it allowed them to connect with
the character more, the camera language was also seeming to be with the flow of
the main character. Through the aesthetics we had seen that the edit of the
film worked well, as our audience feedback said that the “colours and the time
of day that you have filmed some of the seen made it look cinematic and
pleasant to watch” This was due to use filming in a golden hour which is where
the sun is setting or rising. The effect that this had on the short film is
that the lighting made it look like a film a film that you would expect to see
on a bug scene. As it made the film look authentic.
A weakness that we see in the short film that could have been improved
is the sound that we filmed near the beach, this was also recognised by our
audience because there had said “the sound that was meant to be hear which was
the dialogue was over powered by the wind sound near the sea” we had also
agreed on this, and had seen and heard that the sound disvalued the aesthetics
of the film, as the film was up as professional standards and had gone down.
How the improvement of sound would make the short film better is that it would
have made it more clear of what the characters where saying, as this would have
allowed the audience to take the scene into account. another improvement that I
would see in the short film is the transition music as the audience did not
like the music stop and started. there wanted to see a smoother transition. How
this would have made this better is that it would have made the film to have a
cleaner look to it.
Realisation of Proposal
How well our final idea projected the pitch idea into our short film
was quite accurate. As in our advert we had said that we wanted to include a
“mise-en-riens” as this was where an aspect of the middle of the film is placed
at the begging. In our pitch we said that we wanted to show the ending of the
bus scene at the begging of the short film, this was because we wanted to leave
the audience with a question of “what just happened?”. In the pitch we had said
that our binary of our short film was going to be “Man vs Words” we had said
this because we wanted the words and his dyslexia to be his antagonist that
brought his down to his lowest point, we had portrayed this well in the short
film of every time his dyslexia was in play his was always to weak one and feel
hurt by it. How well this had worked is that the audience got to see that there
was something there that was shown to represent an antagonist, as the effectivity
presented the binary well as every time we saw the binary take place we saw
what was weak and what was strong, the audience saw the enemy.
An element that we had said in our pitch towards our short film was
that we were going use the bokeh effect to create an effect and transition of the
visuals of a dyslexic person. As we said in our Pitch “we wanted to test our self’s
as creator as try something new that could allow use to widen our portfolio”
but there was a struggles of creating the effect this was due to time that we
had and the some of the resources that we would need. How this would have made
the short film better is that it would have allowed use to create something new
on cinema as the effect is normally not used in film as there are used in
photography but some have been on video. It would have made the structure of
the short film more unique and different to watch.
Fitness for purpose audience
The target audience that we initial said that we would like to aim
toward the movie to was a 19 year old male, that has an interest of the peaky blinders
and the film of pursuit of happiness, the location would be built around the UK
and have an ethnicity of all. In our audience feedback we had said that the
short film we had a mixed of people that where aimed towards our target
audience. What there said that appealed to them was that fact that there had
someone in their lives that had dyslexia, this was either their younger brother
or friend that had it, as there knew the effect that there had on their
everyday lives. The short film also appealed to them in the scenarios that the
character was in was relatable as they have gone together on dates with their
girlfriend and there have gone out with friend and a stranger had asked for
direction before. How well the short film connected with the audience was really
well as it connected with them as an everyday person.
On the other side what did not relate to the audience was the form of
dyslexia as there have not personally been effected by it , and don’t know the
true effect of it and how it can bring you down, as you lose out of
opportunities. It did not relate to them as the effect it but it gave them a
sense of what a dyslexia person view things in a day to day bases.
Fitness for purpose client
Our short film had meet the brief really well, as we had stuck to the
rules of the brief and had completed the short film in time. It had stated the
production group had to be no larger than three, in our group we had two it was
me and Ben as a group, as we knew we had a good view of each other’s ideas. We
had finished the short film in time for the submission deadline od June 2017 as
we had finished t in the month of June, which had meant we had stayed in schedule.
It had also started on the brief that the short film had to be a single camera production,
we had kept it to a single camera production to with stand and retain the
quality of the video. How this was effective is that it gave use a set rule to follow,
as it gave us an outline for use to work from.
An aspect from the brief that we initial did not follow, this was not
in our intention what that the brief had stated that the short film main contain
“non copyright video or audio” as the brief was seen to be a professional minded
level. As in the first cut of the short film we had realised that one of our
music was copyrighted, so what we had did is that we had go back to the editing
timeline and had changed the music to a non-copyright music as we did not want
our short film to be declined from the competition.
