Types of Brief

Contractual

Contractual brief is a fixed brief that, describes what the industry is requiring. The brief also include time frame, the pay of the requirement and the deadline for the job requirement.

Where contractual brief will be used in the media environment is in the whole film production cast and crew that is used. What this does is that it tells the cast and crew there responsibility they have .

The disadvantages of  a contractual brief is that there is no negotiability. This mean that they are permanently committed to the assignment that they have signed up to do. The cast and crew do not have a choices to leave as they have sign a consent form that they are assigned for the job.

The advantage for contractual brief is that their is clarity of information that is shown within the contract. This means that there is less chances of messing up the job. It allows the production of the film to be clean and organised without having any mix ups.

Negotiated

A negotiated brief includes more freedom to place your own vision into the idea. It allows you to alter the brief and is open to adding new ideas for the clients and allows the client to choose whether they want to go with the idea or not, further changes can be made until the client is happy.

Where I have used a negotiated brief is in my personal experience when making short film, as i have negotiated the script with the actors as in my short film of friendship, I had negotiated on who was going to be a victim and who was going to be a hero that saves his friend. We had also decided the locations as not all of the actors agreed so we had all picked a locations that we had liked.

The disadvantages of a negotiated brief is that there is not a lot of money made, because there is a small amount of budget that is put in to the film. We had no budget of this short film which had limited us on props that I wanted to use in the shorty film and the location that I wanted to film at. I also did not make any money from this project.

The advantages of negotiated brief is that it allows you to be more creative because you are free to make your own media. There is also a lot of leeway for creativity, and when/where the brief should be completed. We also had contacted each other on group chat and all agreed on a day that we all could film the short film. I had a lot of freedom to created what I wanted to create and show to the public.

Formal

A formal brief is a brief that outlines the responsibilities that inform you about a product of services, it is presented in a neat and formal style that brings across what the clients exactly wants.

I have used a formal brief in the making of our ultra short film. We where giving a set task to complete, as this outlined the elements that we had to add in the short film for example jump-cuts, cross-cutting, montage and e.g. What It also gave us additional information of when is filming was due and when the first and final cut of the ultra shirt film is due.

The disadvantage of formal brief is that there is not a lot of flexibility to adjust the the brief to your liking. You are fixed to this jobs, you don't have freedom of what you can do. We were limited to create a short film that lasted 2:30 as this did not allow us to add more, which put a limits on the amount of content that I place.

The advantage of  a formal brief is that there is clear outline of what you would have to do, as it tell you the the responsibility that you should stick to clearly. Which allows the employee to mess up the job. Where I had experiences an advantage in this project is that techniques where laid out clearly which made the first cut of the short film , my final cut because I had clearly understood what the brief was asking for.

Informal

An informal brief is a short piece of text, such as an e-mail, a conversation that outlines the request for someone to do some work for the client. This is often used to communicate with friends or for when low budget is involved.

I have had an experience with an informal brief , this was used in the making of the multi camera project , as I was editing an sections and was asked to make the segments a short and snapping. I had made the video last around 7 mins and did not have what the same idea of what he had asked for. So i had cut the video down to 2:30 and was seen as perfect for the multi cam show.

The disadvantages for informal brief is that there is more likely chance of the task not being correct the first time. As this may lead to loosing time on doing other jobs. This could also mean that there may be a lack of agreement, of not visualising the same idea.This was shown when it came time to show the first cut and did not the same visuals as the clients , so i had to go bad and change it which look up some time but it was completed in the end. 
The advantage for informal brief is there is trust built. What else is that it is easy to explain. It is a quick and easy form of communications between each other. As me and the client had a short conversation about what he wanted and how long he wanted.

Commission

Commission brief one where both employee and client have worked together before and have formed a good working relationship. because they have used this employee before the client knows exactly how they work and the standards they work at. 

Where I had used a commission brief , is the making of a short film as I had used the same actors that had used from previous short film, as I had got two actors that I both worked with me on two different short film to work on one short film.

The disadvantage of working with a commission brief is that the client loses their own personal freedom because they end up relying on the employee too much. It also means they don't see what other potential candidates can offer which can be better then what their regular employee does.

The advantage of working with a commission brief is that you are comfortable with your employee because you have worked with them before. The client know of the skills that they can do. I had known the extent the both of the actors would go to. I had worked with both actors before for acting and other help, such as camera work and editing.

Tender

Tender briefs are where the client advertises for exterior companies to come and pitch for the brief. This gives the client a chances view and decide on the employee to work with their company, the client has a choice of which company they wish to work with.

Where we can see an example of where tender brief will be used in is when usually hiring a freelance person in the film industry, specifically this could be the editors that are used in the post production stage. As there would come in a present there idea of who there would edit the movie and if the company likes it it would hire them.

The disadvantage of using this Tender is that it doesn't produce a lot of money. there is no guarantee that they will get the job as the client will go for a better offer when offered. The idea from the edittors may not be what the client may be looking for in there movies of how there want to present it.

One of the advantage for tender brief is that it allows you to put your views across, as you are in control of the idea and you get to choice what you want to bring to the audience. As this allows the editors to shows the influences there would places in the edit of the film.

Cooperative Brief

Cooperative brief is where two or more companies/business come together to work on a specific project. This is done because one companies may specialist in a specific skill and may not have all the other skills to complete the assignment, combining both employees skills will result in a better finish.

An example of cooperative brief , would be the film industry that have worked on films together for example Disney and pixer had work on the film Cars. As Pixar had the experience of 3D animation so Disney had asked for there skills to be in the movie.

One of the disadvantages of working with this type of brief is that it makes it harder for the company to stand out. As first Pixar was hard to stand out , as Disney was a much bigger and recognised company then pixar.
The advantage of cooperative brief is that you get to collaborate with other companies and get to build networks. This also allows you to complete the work in a faster paces. As the durations of the productions that Pixar films is done much quickies and there is skills from both companies that are both involved with each other.

Competition

A competition brief is open to the public. This allows the wide range of people to create product for the brief for little to no money. A prize or a reward is awarded to the winner.

Where you would see an example of a competitions brief is in competition of short film, which are also know as short film festivals. An example of this festivals is the BFI festivals as this is a competitions this is opened to the public to enter.

The disadvantage of this is that you have to spend your own money of the project. There is  a never a guarantee that you will make your money back from the prize that you receive. As the money spend of short film will not be earned back as there is hardly any money made from short films .
The advantage of this is that you can be free will your ideas. There no one telling what to as there is a freedom of creating of what you wants and what views you want to put across. The short film that are made are from your influences and BFI only set a limed amount of rule that you should follow around.

Budget 

Budge

The budget of this short film, is the amount of money that was used to make the productions of the short film work, the Budget for this file was $1000. This Budget in the film area is see as nothings, why a small budget is used to make a short film is because that the locations that they use is existing, and the actors that they use are not professional. Where the small budget is shown in the short film is in the mise-en-scene.

How this conventions is denoted in the money box is the mise-en-scnese. What we see throughout the whole video is that the film mkaer had only used on locatiosn throughtout the whole film, which tell us that there may have not have the amount to film in diffrent locations, We see at 3:55 that they had used a street that was existing.. The budget was also defined in the amount of charcter is that there was only only one, this could be becuase that there only had enougth money to afford one charcters.

The effect that the budget has on the short film is that it makes the style and the asesthics of the film seem a certern way, as the budget is shown in the short film of being looking high, as there is proffestional standers that is used to make the 

Twist

Twist

A twist is a conventions that, often leads of to a different directions towards the end. It is an unexpected turn of events. It is a mind twist that changes the views that the videos was going in, and convey it for something else. Where we can see this in the short film of Money Box is at 4:08.

The dentition of this shots that conveys the twist of this movie, is that there is a silhouette of a city which is a establishing shot, with a straight on angles of where the character is at. The building that are shown are alights, as this shows that it is nights and there is power running through the city. What then after happens is the city's lights turns off sections by sections of. where the character is located in the short film.

The effect that the directors has on the viewer by using the twist is that is grabs the viewer attentions , as the flow of short film has chnaged to create a dramatiz impact to the film, and the story of the short film will will be ending as a diffrent viewe of what the audicne was thinking about, as they have must of through that he was going to get all of the money.

Character

 One other short film convention is character, this is see in every short film, what this convention includes is that there are one to three character main placed in a short film. Why this is done is that there is little to get to know the character, which is the reasons of why only one to three characters are placed. Where we can see this character is through out the whole short film, where their are specifically seen is at 1:52.

What is denoted in this shots is that there is a mid shot , with a low angle at the character, which is in a dark light street, with street lamps on. The character is a white male, that is about 5ft 10 which look to be in his twenties. The character is shown through out the whole videos and then where this shows is specifically shown is at 1:52.

The effect that charcate has on the viwer, is that the viwer has some relivance to the chatcter , as in this short film the chracter did not have enough money, asthe audience has been in this situation when buying something. 

Emotional

Emotion

Emotional is a conversation, this is where a explicit and strong emotions is brought across to the audicne that is watching the short film. It is usally a singular strong emotions that that is told in the short film. Where we see the emotions in this short film "Money Box" is at 1:52.

What we can see in this short is that the charcter is holdinmg up the money that he had got from the vending machine,  which in this case is the money box, and his eyes are open wide to show the emotiotn of the character being in shock that the amount of money has come out. We see this spesfic emotions at 1:52. The emotions that is show throughout is that the charater is shocked, this is shown by the charcter facial expressions and his actiosn that he does.

How the director effects the viewes with emotion , is that it give them a mood and feeling to feel when watching the short film, as in this short film the emotione is shoocked, as he getting all of the money from a vending machine.

Niche

Niche

Niche is a conventions that tells a story, or address an issues with little to no mainstream appeal. As there purposely go againest mainstream culture, such as the news as there disagree with it.

What is denoted in the short film athat addresses an issues is at th end the Coca cola botter comes out. Wht is being adressed here is that the man had placed a lot of money inot the machine. What the short film is telli8ng us is that there big soda compmnay are taking all of outr money spesfically cocacolas is taking all of the money is, that the audicnse is beiung fooled, but infcat there money is being sucked away.

The effcet pn the film that the nich idea has, is that it gibve the audicne something to talk about becase there is a explotations of the indusrty of drinks. This is becuase there is a reprsentaiosn of the being drink compnay taking all of the money, without you relasing.

A convention that you can see in this shot film the "JET" is character. What is always seen in short film, there is between one to three character main placed in a short film. Why this is done is that there is little time to get to know the character, which is the reasons of why only one to three characters are placed. We can see this convention through out the whole short film, where their are specifically seen is at 1:21.

There is one main charcter that is shown in this short film which is shown throughput the whole short film. The charcter presona is that he has giving up in life and wants to kills himself. He is confused about life

Why the diretor had used a spesifically one charcter for the short film, is that it craete a effect of focuseing on one person. This also allowes the directors to to create a relationships of between the audience and the charcters. As there create the same feeling at the charctet and what there are going through.

Storyline

Another short film conventiosn that this is shown in Jet is Storyline. A storyline in a short film is the idea of where the whole film will be createted around to tell a story. Wherer we can see as a specfic moment of where the story starts to become a storyline and show meaning is at 2:03.

Wht we can see at this meonment of the storyline is that theree is a gfirl that ios beinmg kidnapped, by a van athat the main charcter has spotted. What thge story lienis that the main charcter has witnhessed a crime and takes actions.

The effect the directors has on the storyline. is that it shows the idea of contravercy, becuase the main charcter wanted to kill himslef , and saw an opptuity to change and safe a little girl, and by this he had shot and killed  three innocent people.

Sound

Sound

Sound is a conventiosn for short film, wher it is minmistically used in the film, as there little to  non diologuge that is said in the short film.

There is no diagouse that is said in the whole short film of Jet. There is not a lot of digetic sound placed, as only hear a districed sound at 5:48  

The effect on the short film has from the lack of sound, is that it give the audine sometthing spesfic to foucuse about which is the actions on screen, this also fit into the emotion of confusetions, becuase it give the film an idea of what is going on and why did he wanted to kill himself.

The emotional conventiosn is the conventuions of where the mood and emotions of the whole short film is brought across to the audience. There is also a clear singular emotions that is shown throughout the the short film.

The emotions that is presented in the short film of Jet is confusions, as this is see throughout the who film, the main charcters present this at the beginning when trying to kill him self, as he is confused of why he has to live. This is also shown towards the end that he had taking to wrong idea of the child being kidnapped.

How the director effects the viewes with emotion , is that it give them feeling and mood to feel  when watching the short film, as in this short film the emotione is confused, as the main actor does not know the reasons of why he wants to kill himself.

The effect that the director creates from the twist is that is cretaes a reprsentaions of the chracter, from not killing himself to killing innocnet lives.

The genere is the theme that the short movie is filmed and what the story is main to reprsent. Shopret film are highly baswede oln showing the gener. The gener is shown throughout the short film, it could be seen in the Mise-en-scense, sound and charcter presoner. Short film evolve around telling and presented the genre clrealy.

The genber of this short film of Mobius is Gangster, the shorty film does contains a test of western. We see this in the actiosn that therr do in the short film as there kill people and get revenge from people that have exposed them.

The effect on the movie has from the genre, is that the film is reprsented in a spesicfic genrea that it has focused on which is gangster. This makes the short movie have a strong presnted genrea.

The budget of this short film, is the amount of money that was used to make the productions of the short film. There was a high budget for this short file as the equments and locations that there hadd used is high end.

The budegt that was used to produces the short film of Mobius is £1,280. This is a very low budget to make a short film, compered to a film , that has millions of pounds to make movies. Were the money was shown in the short film  is the equment that there had used to make it. as there had used advance equment such as a drone

The effect that the budget has on the overall of the short film, is that it restrics the film on doing high end production. Short film are hardly ever funded by productions company. This is the reasons of why there is little to no money is spents. The effect that it woyld have pn the film is that that there are resitited to productes ambitions ideas.

The duractiosn of the short film, decised if the short film in a short film is catigiuse in that sections, as short film lasts up to 35 min, this is statued by the oscars. But there are usally shown between 5-1O minutes.

The durections of Mobius is 10 min and 16 seconds, which mean that this fits in to the criterier of short film.

The effect that the short monet has from the durcations, is that they do not have enough time to tell kore as a story, as there ther only shows an effect, instead of a beginning, middle and end.

Were we see this conventions is at 9:12 there is a scnse of the man being shot and killed. befored that there was a lead up to the concept of the film storyline, as the films shows the future of what will happen to the camera man, as we see at 3:25 the camerea man was looking at a man being shot as this was acctully him being shot, as he had just witnessed his death, but found out at the end of where he was placed in the same postions he saw the himeslf in before.

The directors effect of the additions of abstract creativity is that there is a orginally idea being told to the audience that, has a reprsentiatuosn to it s this also fit into the storline aspect of the idea, as it has an idea of taking a picture of someone being killed but later to find out that you are the one being killed.

What is denoted at 3:52 is that the is a camera man that is taking pictures of of two people killing a man, and there spot him, futher on in the storyline the, we find out that the person being killed is the camera man. The storyline aspect in a short film, is that there is no trun beginning middle and end of the short film, as the short film start off at a certain point. becuase of the shortness of time there is not a lot of time to build a story.

How the director uses of storyline creates an effect on the viewer, is that there is a reprsentaiosn of that you can see your own death infront of your eyes, but you dont relises it,  until you are in the postiosn you saw the person died. The directors craetes an eye opening storyline for the viewer that you may be witnessing your death.
